Blog: Auto World's Cheapest Car Greeted by Environmentalist Protests

When your average salary is a $250/month, you don't buy a car. You ride a scooter, a vehicle which for much of Asia's population is the de facto mode of transportation.

Of course, putting four or five people on a seat meant for one and a half isn't comfortable or even safe. The children have to be constantly held. Occasionally they'll sit on the rear tire shield or stand on the front, skipping the seat entirely. Accidents are common-- and without any sort of protection, even the most trivial often cause serious injury. Exposure to the elements has its health effects, especially for small children who in bad weather typically arrive rain-soaked and covered in mud from foul city streets.

The Indian company Tata is trying to change all that. Its new vehicle, the Nano, has a starting cost of only $2,500.

Jathedars put off parallel meetings in ‘Panth’s interest’

As per the news-item reported in The Tribune, dated February 5, a special leave petition has been filed before the Supreme Court against the orders.

Since the Supreme Court is now seized of the mater, it will not be justified and proper for us to adjudicate on this criminal miscellaneous application. The same is adjourned sine dine till a final decision is taken on the special leave petition pending before the Supreme Court, the judges added.

The court, on December 11, had handed over the investigations of the matter to the CBI after taking suo motu cognizance of news-reports carried in these columns.

A public prosecutor contended that the order was liable to be modified as "the core issue regarding the jurisdiction of the High Court to refer a matter for investigation to the CBI without the consent of the state government was pending consideration before a larger bench of the SC.

Unraveling TV's switch from analog to digital

But it's pretty clear which business interests stand to gain.

Cable and satellite TV companies could see a wave of new subscribers as people with older TVs pass on hooking up converter boxes to older televisions or buying new sets. Local stations are already using some of the extra capacity digital broadcasting frees up by launching auxiliary TV channels with weather and traffic reports, and they're looking for ways to bring programming to portable devices.

The Federal Communications Commission began the switch many years ago to free up a large chunk of U.S. airwaves, which the government is in the process of auctioning off, a process that will net billions of dollars for public coffers. Making all UHF broadcast spectrum above channel 52 available will allow for powerful new wireless services, and possibly for a new network for public safety officials to use during disasters.

Iron Mountain stand-off ends

Is it fair to judge people,to tell people like Mr.N. to grow up or put Christ in his life.Isn't that God's job to judge. Why don't we direct our thoughts and prayers to the young gentleman who got himself the this sad situation in the first place. To MR. North, I think your writing is brilliant, you should do it for a living!

all said and done

I think that the police did fine. They did what they had to and no one got hurt, but that also makes it seam like the lock down was unnecessary. Not only that but the school decided to give us all pizza. The distribution of which was as thus: most students got at least one. Some students had more, but doesn't it seem like a big expenditure that could be put to a better use. Not to mention that no one got hurt, yet all of the Iron Mountain High School students who had a first block vocational class were sent home (something we had all hoped for by the second hour in the same classroom).

Sino-Blizzard 08: The ice factor

In my last post I jested that China's recent snow trouble was nothing like what we face back where I'm from. And while that may be true, there is one aspect of China's dilemma that resembles what we faced back in Canada. For us, it wasn't so much the snow that caused the problems as it was the ice. When ice covers transmission towers, it can potentially bend them to the ground as if they were made of straw: This youku.com video, which graced their front page today, shows that China is, indeed, facing the same icy problem. Scaling and repairing icy transmission towers likely was not a big part of the workers' training, I'm sure. Let's hope it's covered somewhere in their manual. For a comprehensive look at China's snow woes, drop on over to All roads lead to China, where he points out that the problem runs far deeper than simply an uber-crowded train station.

Perquimans, D.F. Walker, to share $1M tech grant

Local educators hope a $1 million state technology grant will make an impact on the way students learn.

Perquimans County Schools, along with D.F. Walker Elementary School in the Edenton-Chowan Schools, was one of four recipients of a $1 million-plus IMPACT grant.

The grant will ensure that each classroom has a SMART Board (interactive whiteboard), a video projector, a laptop computer, speakers, a digital camera and a scanner.

Funded through the state Department of Public Instruction, the grant goes toward implementing the IMPACT model at each school. A collaborative model, IMPACT pairs teachers with technology facilitators and media coordinators to teach across the curriculum. Perquimans Central School was selected as one of the state's initial IMPACT model schools in 2003.

about this blog

We are awash, of course, in clouds of yellow pollen, now that the oaks have begun their annual sex party. I'm still sort of amused at myself for thinking yesterday was the right day to wash our cars. In fact, I remember thinking, as I did so, "Oh, good, this means it'll rain soon." But no...just waves and waves more pollen...coating everything, including this sunflower seedling in the back garden.Posted by PicasaFortunately, the pollen doesn't give me too much trouble, except as regards appearances...and the odd explosive sneeze. Which is good, as this is sort of an exciting time in the garden. In the fall, and throughout the spring, in my quest for the ultimate, overgrown cottage garden look, I've followed each weeding session with a pretty casual scattering of different seeds. Some were collected in other parts of the garden, or in other gardens...or just along the side of the road.
